Instructional Games – How They Can Help You Learn Stock Market Trading

Submitted by on September 7, 2009 – 2:53 pmNo Comment

There is a popular phrase that says… “Practice makes a man perfect”, and there could not have been a phrase that is more true for the stock market.

We all realise from our lives that this is absolutely the truth. There are mock interview sessions that prepare a person for the big job interview. A stage actor would definitely appear in countless rehearsals before that performance. A sportsperson has to go to the club for regular practice before he/she can wear the team colours. And in the context of the stock market, whether in Australia or somewhere else, practice assumes even more importance because you are investing your hard earned money here. Yes of course, there are several courses you could attend where you will learn the basics, and perhaps get even some advanced training and get some good tips too, but all that is theoretical knowledge. And just like there is a big gap between ‘the cup and the lip’, transferring all this knowledge into practice might be a different thing altogether.

This is precisely why some practice in the stock market, or hands-on stock market investing can be a great thing. Instructional games play a vital role here, because this is what these games allow the investors to experience.

Stock Market Instructional Games – What Are These?

These are simulation games that allow the potential investor to gather the necessary hands-on experience about stock market investing. These games often mirror the real stock market and they follow all the regulations too. Often the game begins and the investor is given a sum of money (of course this is not real money). The investor decides what he/she wants to achieve in the market – that is, whether the person is a long term investor or whether he/she prefers to day trade. Based on these decisions and the amount at hand, the gamer buys certain stocks and starts to monitor the fluctuations. Everything here is just like the real stock market.

As the game progresses, there are updates about the economy and the market such as – company results, competitor information, inflation and growth figures, changes in the govt. policies and so on. Based on these updates, the prices of various stocks keep changing including the ones the person has purchased. These updates are often taken from real life – meaning, this is what is happening in the market currently.

After certain time the gamer is able to see whether he/she is making a loss or profit. And this of course lets the person find out whether the buying/selling decisions taken where accurate or not.

How Does Stock Market Instruction Games Help?

Since this is all make-believe and there is no real money involved, the potential investor gets the real life experience in stock investing. And of course, for someone who is really invested in the market, they can be a lot of fun too.

Often, not just the beginner, but even those who have some experience in stock market investing play these games when they want to try out a new theory in practice or just want some fun.
